Who We Are

For 29 years: The Balm In Gilead, Inc. builds and strengthens the capacity of African-American faith communities to deliver programs and services that contribute to the elimination of health disparities.

What We Do

Healthy Churches 2020 National Conference is the leading training conference for establishing and sustaining Health Ministries for congregations serving African Americans.

Our Goals

Increase an understanding of concepts and models of disease management to improve the quality of life for African- Americans with chronic health conditions.

Our Speakers

Dr. Renita J. Weems

Reverend Dr. Renita J. Weems is a biblical scholar, a writer, an ordained minister, and a public intellectual whose scholarly insights into modern faith, biblical texts, and the role of spirituality in everyday lives make her a highly sought-after writer and speaker. She has numerous books, commentaries and articles on the Bible and prophetic religion to her credit. Among these are “Just A Sister Away” (1987 & 2005); “I Asked for Intimacy” (1993); “Song of Songs: A Commentary”, Interpreter’s Bible Series, Vol. 5 (Abingdon, 1997). Her 1999 book, “Listening for God: A Minister’s Journey Through Silence and Doubt” (Simon & Schuster), won the Religious Communicators’ Council’s prestigious 1999 Wilbur Award for “excellence in communicating spiritual values to the secular media”. Dr. Weems received her B.A. from Wellesley College (Wellesley, Massachusetts) and her Masters and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary (Princeton, New Jersey).

Dr. Khaalida T. Forbes

Dr. Khaalida T. Forbes, MSW, DMIN  is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Metamorphosis Enterprises, Atlanta, GA.   As a native of New York, Dr. Forbes holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Virginia State University, both a Masters degree in Clinical Social Work as well as a Masters of Divinity degree from Howard University, and an earned Doctorate of Ministry degree in Prophetic Preaching for the 21st Century from United Theological Seminary. 

Bishop Horace E. Smith, M.D.

Bishop Horace E. Smith, M.D. is a man gifted with a passion for God’s Word coupled with a love for God’s people.  He has a contagious spirit of generosity that overflows in every facet of his life.  As pastor of the Apostolic Faith Church and an attending physician specializing in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Memorial Hospital), Dr. Horace E. Smith has treated bodies and souls for three decades.

Dr. Tamara Huff

Dr. Tamara Huff is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at St. Francis Orthopaedic Institute in Columbus, Georgia. Among her many notable works and achievements along her journey is certification in clinical and translational science, the cornerstone of the future of medicine. This highly interdisciplinary approach to medicine and science is aimed at curing and treating patients by translating research findings and data into new diagnostic tools, procedures, medicines and policies.
